چکیده

This paper reports upon the levels of chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticide residues in Peregrine Falcons ( F&o peregrinus ) , Peregrine eggs, and in the prey species of Peregrines from western Canada, and compares these findings with those from other regions, particularly Great Britain. Also included are data on the reproductive success of the pairs we encountered. This project was conceived when it became clear at the International Conference on the Biology of the Peregrine Falcon held at Madison, Wisconsin, in September 1965 that organoclhlorine residues are very possibly responsible ‘ for the drastic decline of Peregrines in Europe, Great Britain, and the United States. #Several scholars in England (Cramp 1963; Ratcliffe 1963; Ratcliffe 1965; Jefferies and Prestt 1966) have attempted to correlate the reduction of the Peregrine with the presence of pesticide residues, but no work on the subject in North America has been published.

Assessing breeding potential of peregrine falcons based on chlorinated hydrocarbon concentrations in prey.

Peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) now breed successfully in most areas of North America from which they were previously extirpated. The loss during the mid-part of the last century of many of the world's peregrine populations was largely a consequence of impaired reproduction caused by the effects of DDE on eggshell quality and embryo hatchability. Population recovery has been attributed to ...

PCB levels and accumulation patterns in waterbird eggs and in their prey at Lake Kerkini, a north-eastern Mediterranean wetland of international importance.

Seven "target" PCB levels were determined and compared in waterbird eggs, in their prey, and in water at Lake Kerkini, northern Greece, to investigate PCB bioaccumulation patterns and to define the best bioindicator of target PCBs for this area. PCBs were analysed from eggs of Phalacrocorax carbo, Podiceps cristatus, Ardea cinerea, Egretta garzetta, and Nycticorax nycticorax and from prey types...

The Effect of Kleptoparasitic Bald Eagles and Gyrfalcons on the Kill Rate of Peregrine Falcons Hunting Dunlins Wintering in British Columbia

Kleptoparasitism in birds has been the subject of much research, and the Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a known kleptoparasite. It has been reported to pirate ducks captured by Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus), but ours is the first study to examine the effect of kleptoparasitic Bald Eagles on the kill rate of shorebird-hunting Peregrines and indirectly on a population of Dunlins ...
